City Council meetings but for every criticism IHS based there were dozens of churches businesses and individuals that recognized the cloud was offering more than handouts he was offering understanding support and hope to a population desperately in need father wasn't interested in creating dependents his goal was to assist people through their time of Crisis to get back vacuum to go home everybody who comes in our place if we can hang out if we can make it work will have a game plan where they're headed in life and I will help them achieve their game plan because of the generous outpouring of support from the community IHS survive those difficult early years and began to thrive as a sanctuary for those needing help and who were those people at first many were from the mainland people playing old lives hoping start over in Paradise or people stranded when jobs are marriages didn't work out only about 26% with local but from the beginning father recognized he was serving an increasing number of individuals with mental illness as the state hospital basic increase cuts and closures he realized these individuals would become a growing challenge to assist released with nowhere to go no means to support themselves and to mentally ill to even know how to go to the process of applying for assistance other Claude understood that stabilizing these people would require clinical intervention before Partnerships with mental health centers to provide volunteer social workers a nurse psychiatrist the doctors through the first ten years of IHSS existence a cig you can shift took place in the demographic population of homeless people with their dramatic cuts to Social Services and funding for construction of public housing rising cost of living combined with low paying jobs and the closure of State hospitals there were an estimated to 500 homeless in Hawaii by 1987 70% were local residents and 30% of them were suffering from physical or mental illness at that time I H S was serving over 600 meals a day and Sheltering up to 250 people approximately 80 of them women and children father understood the need to be able to adapt facilities and services to provide for the specific needs of the changing homeless population to continue expanding Partnerships with healthcare providers to increase access to Essential Medical Care eventually resulting in the opening of a health center within the Sumner shelter he also advocated for a second emergency shelter to be created that could accommodate women and families with children many families and also women with children he really dreamed of having a spot where he could put the women and children separate from the man and have two places then in 1987 by the clock was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and though he remained active is IHSS director after his diagnosis he announced his retirement as director in 1990 passing leadership on to a new generation father Club Datil passed away on 22nd 1997 since then we have maintained father clubs core values of helping anyone in crisis to stabilize and receive assistance and we continue to recognize the changing needs of the different homeless populations wieser and strive to adapt our services to meet those needs as father Claude used to say there is no such thing as a typical homeless person he believed it was critical to Taylor Solutions towards individual the by pursuing this goal weekly, integrated homeless service provider thousands of homeless people continue to seek shelter with IHS annually and each year thousands integrate back into the community still there is a large population of chronically homeless in Hawaii people with mental or serious substance-abuse dependencies Who Remain homeless for decades in addressing this challenge IHSS develop new strategies to help get these individuals better access to the medical treatment they so desperately need this is the goal of Art medicine and the results of this endeavor are highlighted in prescribing hope much has changed in the past 40 years but what has not changed his IHS is unique position in our community to assist the wide array of people in crisis and provide services help them and they're homeless and with the generosity churches businesses Community groups and individuals who tirelessly volunteered their time and resources prepare meals and donate Goods in floods IHS stands today as Hawaii's oldest richest and most comprehensive homeless service provider all of you have helped make father Vision a reality and have changed the lives of countless thousands of people 38 years call when are found your father Call of Duty all started IHS as the peanut butter Ministry near he invited people to come and be a part of the solution they came in droves they made peanut butter sandwiches they ended up starting to breathe hot meals write a lot of the resources that was needed to basically help people come off the street I think people don't realize that sometimes you have government has a lot of resources but it does come with a lot of rolls and sometimes we need that flexibility the only the private sector and the public can help us read when we get private donations from the public it really allows is so much more latitude to help people buy it just serves as a hub that really connects our clients with more than 80 other organizations with that we partner with we have to be more specialized in the way that we deliver our services we are creating more options for people people who have substance abuse problem Navy people with mental illness nearest word losing their housing families with children that really have nowhere to go these are the ways that we are really trying to build on our Legacy I've always been inspired by the Aloha in this community it inspires how to keep thinking about how we can solve homelessness together better so we keep looking for new ways to meet the needs of the people they keep changing and we need to keep changing and that's why I H S keeps looking for New Direction new strategies new ways to meet the needs of the people that we served we really believe that homelessness can be solved together I just can't do it alone and we need your help today so please give I support the momentum that we've built over the last few years we want to end homelessness with you is homecoming Mililani
